The next Wall Street Crash: Shemitah

BACChristian is designed to debunk theological nonsense, explain the Gospel and to show how the Bible is the inerrant word of God. This post, being slightly different from the others, looks at the modern financial economies and their possible connection to time cycles ordained in the Bible. It may be a post out of a conspiracy theory nut's dreams, however the information raises serious questions which all links in with the Bible.

The Bible often instructs us on financial matters. It teaches general principles of money management such as to not be indebted to anybody and to tithe our earnings. In Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus speaks on the parable of the talents, whereby people are given money to invest.

However, the Bible also provides more specific instructions. Turn to Leviticus 25. God instructs the Israelites that every seventh year is to be a year of rest - a year of rest for the farm land; a year of rest for investing; a year of repayment of debts; and a year to treat slaves as equal. After every seven, seven year periods (so the 49th year) is the year of Jubilee. In the jubilee year, all debts are off; land is returned to its original owners and slaves are set free. This year of Jubilee is a picture of the forgiveness of God that we can attain through His Son Jesus Christ.

Let us focus on the seven year cycles.

Leviticus 25:2-6 "Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I shall give you, then the land shall have a sabbath to the Lord. Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its crop, but during the seventh year the land shall have a sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD; you shall not sow your field nor prune your vineyard. Your harvest’s aftergrowth you shall not reap, and your grapes of untrimmed vines you shall not gather; the land shall have a sabbatical year. And all of you shall have the sabbath products of the land for food; yourself, and your male and female slaves, and your hired man and your foreign resident, those who live as aliens with you’"

In accordance with Leviticus 25, every 7 years there is a year of rest for the Jewish nation. This year is known as Shemittah. The word Shemitah literally means 'to release'. The keeping of Shemittah was important. 2 Chronicles 36:20-21 tells us that the 70 year Babylonian captivity of Israel came about because Israel had failed to keep God's commandments regarding Shemittah ("And those who had escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon; and they were servants to him and to his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths. all the days of its desolation it kept sabbath until seventy years were complete.")

Shemittah is based on the Jewish calender and runs from 29th Elul - 29th Elul. In today's world, that is September to September (the day differs each year). This year it falls on 25th September 2014 (last Thursday) to 13th September 2015, therefore we are now in the year of Shemittah.

25th September 2014 - 13th September 2015: The Year of Shemittah

What relevance does this bear today?

People believe that the year of Shemittah is linked to the economy. Whether it is or not, is ultimately unknown, however it is interesting to see that the stock market has severely corrected itself during every Shemittah year.

Go back 7 years from today to the previous Shemittah year, 2008. In 2008 we experienced the worst financial collapse of our times and the world was plunged into recession which it is still recovering from. Go back 7 years from 2008 we hit 2001. The world trade centre attacks took place on September 11th, the end of the Shemittah year, leading to a massive stock market crash on September 17th.

We can continue to go back all the way through history and see how the year of Shemittah coincides with a market crash. Coincidence?

Continuing on... going back 7 years from 2001 we hit 1994, the year of a massive bond market collapse resulting in the demise of major bank Fannie Mac and near bankruptcy of the state of California.

Go back 7 years again and we hit 1987, the year of 'Black Monday' on 19th October. Go back 7 years again to 1980 where there was a stagflation crises during the Thatcher and Reagan era.

1973? - Oil embargo crisis, resulting in the three day week in Britain, economic downturn and even rationing in parts of USA.

1966 - massive market correction.

1959 - crash

1952 - the beginning of the Suez crisis, seen by many as the true end of the British Empire, and a poor economic year

1945 - end of world war two, beginning of the cold war.

1938 - downturn/ depression era

1931 - Britain leave gold standard causing market crash (contrary to popular belief, the biggest market crash happened in 1931 and not 1929).

You get the picture. This goes all the way back.

Could it just be a coincidence? Could it be God's way of protecting His chosen people? Could it be a sign of things to come? The Bible states that God has given us signs to be able to discern the season and the second coming of Christ.

Whichever it is.... it's interesting. The year of Shemittah is due to end on 13th September 2015. On that day there also happens to be a lunar eclipse - which is another sign used in the Bible preceding events. To understand that requires you to study the Bible and its meanings, which is not included in this post.

Are we are due for another crash this year? Let's see what happens.

God has given us signs to discern the times and the return of His Son Jesus. When that is we do not know. In Matthew 25 Jesus tells those who have put their trust in God not to be worried. Whatever happens, we can be assured that the Lord Jesus' return is imminent and that His truth never changes, therefore it is crucial that we are right with God, for we do not know when He is coming. We must put our trust in Christ and the sacrifice He made for us upon the cross.

Matthew 25: 5-8; 29-30

"5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all[a] these thingsmust come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences,[b] and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."
