1 Thessalonians 2: Are Actions More Important than Words?

Image
Many Christians hold the view that it is what we do, not what we say, that is most important in spreading the gospel, however this viewpoint is entirely unbiblical. The phrase “preach the gospel and use words if necessary” spoken by Francis of Assisi is often quoted to back up the view, but Francis of Assisi never actually spoke these words at all. What he did say was, “[we]…should preach by our deeds.” ( Rule 1221, Chapter 12 ). The meaning of this is completely different to the meaning of the phrase we often hear used in our churches today. Whilst some Christian believers in the ‘actions not words’ approach are sincere and perhaps naïve, the majority who hold strong to this view do so out of cowardice and fear to speak out for Christ. Granted some people are more gifted with public speaking than others, but this should not stop any of those who have chosen to follow the Lord Jesus from speaking up and out for Him: whether it is preaching; encouraging a fellow Christia...

Does God hear the prayers of sinners?

Image
Does God hear the prayer of a sinner who has not put his trust in Christ, or is He only able to hear the prayers and supplications of those who are saved by Christ? In answering this question it is important that you do not allow your emotions to cloud your judgment, for this question carries many emotional connotations. For from this question, many specific questions can be asked such as, were the prayers of those in Autswitch heard by God or, where the prayers of those unsaved in 9/11 heard? Such questions are endless and divert the focus of the question from the infallible truth of God to our own fallible emotions.   With regards to such questions it is important to understand two things: 1.          In terrible events where people have suffered and died, it seems unconscionable to our way of thinking that some of those people who died in grave circumstances would be apart from God or that God would not have heard their prayers b...

Genesis 8:6-9 Raven and the Dove

Genesis 8:6-9 “So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made. 7 Then he sent out a raven which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth. 8 He also sent out from himself a dove, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground. 9 But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her, and drew her into the ark to himself.” Romans 15:4 tells us “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” The things recorded in Scriptures are for our learning. Each letter is a revelation from God. To pay attention to the details will reveal the wonders of the scriptures and show the inerrancy of God’s Word. What significance are the raven and the dove in Genesis 8...

A life with Christ

When you learn a new skill whether it be acquiring a language, learning to cook or learning to play a musical instrument, the material you use to teach you the skill, whether it is a lesson plan, a recipe or a song book containing various songs, you will probably encounter the same words at the beginning of each material. The words being; ‘beginner’; ‘intermediate’ or; ‘advanced’. We tackle each lesson based on our skill level. Once we have mastered that particular thing we will move on to something more challenging to us. What is important is that we do not attempt things that are above our current level of skill. Whilst a beginner guitarist may be very good at playing a song with four chords, he would be lost and confused if he tried to follow a fast finger picking song or a complicated classical guitar strumming pattern. Whilst a beginner cook may cook a fine fried egg, their attempt at baking a crème brulee would result in disaster.   It is important to master what we kno...

John 14

Take encouragement from this brilliant chapter. We are not alone. As BAC's we have the all powerful Holy Spirit indwelling within us. 'Christ in You'. John 14:20 "I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you"... Everything Christ has, we have through Him. Everything Christ has done, we have done through Him. No longer are we condemned by our sin, because Christ has borne sin upon His shoulders and destroyed it's hold over us. John 14 New King James Version (NKJV) The Way, the Truth, and the Life 14  “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2  In My Father’s house are many mansions;  if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [ b ] 3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4  And where I go you know, and the way you know.” 5  Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going...
