How much proof do you need before you believe?

Image
Belief in God is not about seeing God, nor is a lack of belief due to not seeing God. Belief in God is a choice you make about how you want to interpret the evidence for God's existence that has been presented to you.  Say a man was to begin speaking to you about his wife whom you had never met. It would be odd if you did not believe in her existence, even if you had never heard of her or seen her before. It is more than likely that you would take the man for his word. If for some reason you did not believe the man you may ask him to show you some proof that she exists, such as her photo I.D., marriage certificate or social security number. If the man was able to produce these documents, then this would be taken as proof of the wife's existence. The more evidence provided the more you would believe in her. The evidence could be documentary evidence or hearsay evidence, such as stories told about her by other people. Upon production of all this evidence, most peo...

Hebrews 11:1 What is faith?

Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen." Today, to have faith is considered by many as foolish. It is science that most people now chose to believe in. Undoubtedly science has furthered mankind and benefited us greatly, but when it comes to the question of life and death, science is still (and always will be) unable to produce an answer for us. However, most people don't stop to think about what the Christian faith actually is. Is it something for the foolish and the weak, or is it a faith that is calculated and well placed? There is no doubt that you can have a foolish faith. Many people put their faith in things that have no basis. What about the Christian faith? Hebrews 11:1 provides a definition of what biblical faith is. To understand what it is saying it is best to deconstruct the verse into two parts: "faith is the substance of things hoped for;" and "the evidence of things not seen...

Biblical Hope

Today the word hope can be included in the same bracket as luck. The definition of the word in its modern sense is a desire. There is no basis in a hope today. It is mostly empty. When people say ‘I hope this happens’, the odds may be fifty fifty. The person may not have any control over the situation they are referring to, therefore all that is left for them to do is sit tight and ‘hope’ that the outcome is in their favour. Sometimes when you ask people if they think they are going to heaven after they die they reply ‘I hope so’; the word hope being used in the same context as when they hope some situation they’re in will turn out for their good, or when they hope that their favorite sports team will win. We only get one chance at this life. Hebrews 9:27 states that we have all been appointed a time to die once. This is literally a life and death situation. I don’t know about you but I do not want my destination after I die to be based upon a fleeting hope. It is to...
