Why are Christians geeks?

Why are Christians geeks? It's a viable question.

When you go to a youth event today or you go to a 'Christian' rock concert or turn on the 'Christian' television channels, you find people who are trying to be cool. They are trying to keep up with the latest trends, they have the latest hair styles and they use the latest slang words, but despite all this, they are complete geeks. Although some of them dress like they've come straight outa' Compton, you know that if they actually went to Compton they wouldn't quite fit in!

From a Non-Christian's point of view, it's pathetic. From a Christian's point of view, it's annoying because they are promoting Christianity as something that it is not. To all those geeks out there who say we need to be culturally relevant to reach our youth today I commend you for your heart being in the right place. But two things come to mind: 1) You ain't foolin' nobody, geek. 2) Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

So, why are the majority of the mainstream Christians we see today geeks? Because they want to be accepted by both God and the world.  To do this they try to import the world's culture into Christianity and remove the sin so they can use it to praise God. What we get is a parallel universe where everything the world has to offer, modern Christianity offers in a less appealing, more dorky way.

Why are these Christians, with such a heart for saving the lost, so insecure in their faith that they must build their outreach programmes and church services upon things of the world? "It attracts more people" they say. No, it attracts them initially because they are attracted by the very things the world considers 'cool'. Things that satisfy the flesh. Once they realise it is a mere imitation they move on to, in their opinion, better things.

At least the world promotes itself for what it truly is - sinful. The church on the other hand uses worldly things when that is not what they are truly about. You've heard of 'wolves in sheeps clothing', but have you hear of 'sheep in wolves clothing'!? Their actions reek of insecurity.

Importing worldly culture also allows Christians to bring as much of their old sinful ways of living with them and 'redeem' them for the Lord. If you think this is okay you are foolish! You cannot do this. You must repent of your old ways. You must turn your back on them. You cannot bring them with you. Not only can you not bring your old ways with you but you must you must posses a violent hatred toward those former ways and towards sin, as it is completely against God.

Bringing your old ways into your new life is like putting new wine in an old wine skin. By doing this you are accepting grace whilst remaining slaves to sin. But if you accept grace you are no longer slaves to sin, you are slaves to righteousness. 'Do not treat grace as a common thing'. Grace is to be respected.

God is holy. 1 Peter 1:16 tells us to be holy, for He is holy. Why would such a Holy God want to be praised through things that are unholy!?

Wake up Geeks. Christianity is a hard life to live for a man with sinful desires. The path to heaven is narrow, the path to destruction is wide. If you cannot leave your sinful ways behind then I am deeply saddened and fearful for you, but do not then infect others in the Christian faith through your inability to turn from your sin.

Sanctify yourselves!
