Making a Guilty Plea in God's Heavenly Court?

If you read any of the other blogs on this page then it will be common knowledge to you that one day you must stand before God to be held accountable according to His law - a law, from which we know that we have all broken by reading the 10 Commandments.

If you have broken God's law, then justice demands that you must bear the punishment, just in the same way as if you appeared in your local criminal court and had been found guilty of a crime you would have to pay the price.

If you were found guilty of a crime in your local criminal court, it would not matter how sorry you are, or how much of a good person you usually are; if you have broken the law then you must bear the punishment.

But, what about if you were to make a guilty plea?

In English law, a person has the chance to reduce their sentence by choosing to plead guilty. How much their sentence will be reduced by will depend upon when they makes their guilty plea.

In English law it is possible to have your sentence potentially reduced by the following maximum amounts:

  1. If you make your guilty plea at the first opportunity (i.e at the police station):   one third reduction
  2. If you make your guilty plea after the trial date has been set:                        one quarter reduction
  3. If you make your guilty plea on the day of the trial:                                          one tenth reduction

By choosing to plead guilty it is possible for the perpetrator to have their sentence reduced.

Would this work in God's court?

First of all it should be noted that it is not possible to have your sentence reduced if you plead guilty once the trial has begun. When the trial comes to the sentencing stage, it is too late to change your plea. That is the same with God's court. When we die it is too late to put our guilty plea in, for the sentencing process has already begun.

But what if we were to put in our guilty plea before we die? Would our guilty plea be able to reduce our sentence like it can in our criminal courts?

The answer is yes. By pleading guilty to your sin and putting your trust in Christ, your sentence will not only be reduced but will be removed completely. You will be justified in Christ.

Jesus Christ came to take the punishment you deserved by dying upon the cross and raising up on the third day. So now, by putting our trust in Christ, our punishment can be removed from us and we can be justified in Christ under God's law.

Put in your guilty plea to God today and put your trust not in yourself but in the Saviour Christ Jesus, before it is too late. You cannot put in your plea once you have reached the sentencing process. For by then it is too late.

You don't know what will happen tomorrow.
